In between this week’s science, undergraduate teaching, group meetings and outreach talks (at Putney High) this week has been full of celebration for all women in the physics department.
First, for the PG Lunch (Monday 9th)
All photographs are courtesy of the brilliant Meilin Sancho!
It was a great turnout and there was lots of great discussion between PGs who would otherwise not have had the chance to meet. You can read my detailed report here.
Now the UG Lunch (Wednesday 11th)
The UG students really enjoyed the lunch, especially the inter-year networking and opportunities to find out about what other women in physics are doing.
Events that the UG students would like IC WiP to arrange:
*Women-only meetings/ seminars with women professors where they can ask questions relating to being a women scientist / work-family balance. (Fay Dowker, Marina Galand, Juliet Pickering).
*Informal women-only lunch/tea/meeting (like the lunches). This is so they can get to know each other, get to know girls from other years and generally get a support network.
*Scientific (as opposed to industry) career-fair aimed at women
*Guest lectures/talks by women academics (from Imperial and other institutions)- much like the space science talk today.
There’s a real space at IC for us to provide this support net to all the girls in the undergraduate community.
Coming up there is:
25/03/15: Women in STEM Training Day
14/04/15: Science Rocks girls visit campus for a day
22/04/15: Girls in physics schools open day
06/05/15: Women in stem media training find about funding on Monday)
13/05/15: UG open day
Late May: Y3/4 seminar tackling ‘Barriers opposing Women in Science’- Amelle Zair, Fay Dowker, Marina Galand and Juliet Pickering
26/09/2015: G4G London
Socially, next steps would be an informal tea / cake afternoon late next term (will try to not clash with UG exams)- joint with IC optical society.
